Devonport
Devonport’s commercial heart along lower Victoria Road dates back to the 1860s, when the new ferry service first connected the suburb to Auckland city. By the 1920s, Victoria Road had become the North Shore’s leading commercial centre, lined with elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings – many of which are now heritage-listed. Today, the area is home to unique boutique shops, high-end fashion retailers, gift stores, and a range of attractions for visitors and locals alike.
Devonport is also one of Auckland’s premier art destinations. The suburb features four iconic galleries, a writers’ centre, and 22 public artworks connected by a walking art trail. It has long been home to some of New Zealand’s most celebrated writers and poets, including Michael King, Kevin Ireland, Michele Leggott, and Graeme Lay. The Michael King Writers’ Centre on the slopes of Mount Victoria/Takarunga continues this literary tradition, welcoming writers from across the country and beyond to develop their craft.
