Maungawhau (Mt Eden)
Standing 196 metres tall, Maungawhau / Mount Eden is Auckland’s highest volcanic cone and one of its most iconic landmarks. Once a large Māori pā (fortified village), the terraces, storage pits, and crater—Te Ipu-a-Mataaho—still tell stories of its rich history and cultural significance. Today, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across Tāmaki Makaurau from the award-winning boardwalk, which winds gently around the summit and crater rim.
Be sure to stop by the Te Ipu Kōrero visitor centre and the Friend & Whau Café for a coffee and a deeper look into the maunga’s geological and cultural past. The summit is vehicle-free, so bring your walking shoes and enjoy this special site with care and respect.
