Auckland War Memorial Museum – Iconic & Insightful

Wintergardens – Historic & Blooming Beauty

Maungawhau (Mt Eden): Views, history, and volcanic wonders

Standing 196 metres tall, Maungawhau / Mount Eden is Auckland’s highest volcanic cone and one of its most iconic landmarks. Once a large Māori pā (fortified village), the terraces, storage pits, and crater—Te Ipu-a-Mataaho—still tell stories of its rich history and cultural significance. Today, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across Tāmaki Makaurau from the award-winning boardwalk, which winds gently around the summit and crater rim. Be sure to stop by the Te Ipu Kōrero visitor centre and the Friend & Whau Café for a coffee and a deeper look into the maunga’s geological and cultural past. The summit is vehicle-free, so bring your walking shoes and enjoy this special site with care and respect.

SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s - Dive into an Underwater Adventure

Explore the wonders of the ocean at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s, one of Auckland’s top family attractions. Parnell Baths – Saltwater Splash Since 1914 

The iconic Parnell Baths have been welcoming Aucklanders since 1914. With a 60-metre saltwater lane pool – the largest of its kind in New Zealand – it’s perfect for serious swimmers or those after a casual splash. There’s fun for the whole whānau, with an aqua playground, heated lido pool, toddler zones, and both adult and family spas. Whether you’re swimming laps or just lounging poolside, it’s the ultimate summer hangout. The Baths are only open through summer.

Parnell Rose Garden – A Fragrant Urban Escape

Also known as Dove-Myer Robinson Park, the Parnell Rose Garden is home to over 5,000 rose bushes, blooming spectacularly through summer and autumn. Wander through themed gardens like the popular White Garden and the heritage-filled Nancy Steen Garden. Visit during the Parnell Rose Festival in November for live music, market stalls, and more. After your garden stroll, head down to Judges Bay and the historic Parnell Baths just a short walk away.

Alexandra Park has been Auckland’s harness racing hub for over 130 years. Race nights are held most Fridays with options for walk-ins or ticketed dining. Their popular Mid-Winter and Christmas-at-the-Races events are a local favourite.

Ōrākei Basin Walkway – Volcanic Lagoon Loop 

Formed by a volcanic eruption 85,000 years ago, Ōrākei Basin offers a stunning 3.1-km loop walk just minutes from central Auckland. Enjoy views of the city, spot native birds, and stroll over scenic boardwalks and bridges. Dogs are welcome (on leads), and nearby cafés like Bowl & Arrow or Moustache provide the perfect post-walk treat.

Located at the corner of Balmoral and Dominion Roads, Potters Park is a favourite among families for good reason. This 3-hectare reserve offers something for everyone, from wide green spaces to shaded picnic spots. In summer, kids love the water splash pad—Auckland’s first! It runs daily from 10am to 8pm and is surrounded by a well-equipped playground, basketball court, and even a learn-to-ride bike track. With accessible paths, plenty of seating, and toilets nearby, Potters Park is perfect for relaxed, family-friendly fun. 

Insider tip: Pack togs and towels for the splash pad. 

Highwic – Gothic Grandeur in Newmarket

Built in 1862 by Alfred Buckland, Highwic is a grand timber Gothic mansion and one of New Zealand’s most elegant heritage homes. Explore its beautifully preserved rooms and gardens, including the romantic Lover’s Walk. This self-guided experience lets you step back into colonial life, with regular events and even demonstrations using the historic coal range. 

Allow: 60–90 minutes; check for special events.

Alberton – A Raj-Era Mansion in Mt Albert

Originally a simple farmhouse built in 1863, Alberton was transformed in the 1870s into a grand Raj-inspired estate. Inside, you’ll find 19th-century furnishings, family artefacts, and the rich history of the Kerr Taylor family. Explore the heritage gardens, wander through distinctive towers and verandahs, and get a glimpse of colonial high society life in Auckland. 

Good to know: Perfect paired with Mt Albert café stops. 

Ewelme Cottage – A Time Capsule in Parnell

Built in 1864 for Reverend Vicesimus Lush and his family, Ewelme Cottage has remained virtually unchanged since the 1880s. With original furniture, books, toys, and photos, this home offers an authentic window into Victorian domestic life. Set in a charming cottage garden, it’s a rare and personal historic experience right in the heart of Parnell.
